CAIRO

More Yesterday than Today

The Nile and Cairo from the air.

Not the boxer, you dolt!)

The Cairo Tower is the tallest building in Cairo (over 600 ft).   Coincidentally Carol is the tallest Carol in Cairo (over 605 feet).

Our oldest guide told us that Cairo had over 500 Mosques.  Our younger guide told us that it had over 1000.   Strictly speaking, 1000 is more than 500, but it makes you wonder if the facts vary with the guide.
The Mosque of Muhammad Ali (and its interior), shown to the right, is a named for him.  It was built in 1830 under his authority and is modeled after one in Istanbul.  Muhammad (1769-1849) was made viceroy of Egypt in 1805, with the title of pasha.  During his tenure, he defeated the Napoleonic armies, the Mamluks (He invited them to dinner, fed them and killed them), modernized the country, and invaded a few of the surrounding countries. The dynasty he established ruled until 1952 when King Farouk was deposed.

Modern Cairo

In the Heart of the City

The Market.  You must bargain.  If you can't, take your guide.  We did. Yam cooker.  Not only are the Yams being cooked, they are being used to keep the door shut. The meat market.  I saw five or six shops like this.  I would eat my dog first!

Ooooh.  GOLD! Look at these and the prices are soooo good.  Let's just go inside.  Oh wait, where is our guide?  I might want to buy something and I need her to bargain.
BEFORE AFTER
Ummm Gold
See that little one there?  I'll just get that.  Ok?  Just that little one.
Did I miss something?
Did I miss something?  Are there any more stores?

The suburbs go back in time

A mile or two from the city center the housing becomes almost primitive.
These water buffalo are at the city's edge
Housing in the city.  I found it depressing, but the occupants seemed happy
People were washing their clothes in the canal in the lower part of this photo of water buffalo.

 Lets go see King Tut!
